Experience of Visiting Leprosy Rehabilitation Village (2010 Spring)

Although we stayed in the leprosy rehabilitation village for just a short morning, what I saw and heard made me feel that this trip was worthwhile.

Before our arrival at the village, I always felt that we would disturb the villagers’ lives – because except for Kaiyong and Fucheng, the two local brothers responsible for medical care, the rest of us could only shake hands and take pictures with the villagers. To put it more bluntly, I felt we would be no different from tourists. However, after our arrival, I observed that the villagers’ attitude was contrary to what I had expected. The smile on their faces and joy in their eyes told us one thing – what they value is our care and love for them, rather than what we can actually do for them.

Kaiyong and Fucheng are solid witnesses to the joy of working for the Lord. Watching the two of them meticulously take care of the patients while talking and laughing with the patients—quite in contrast to some well-paid people in North America who always come to work with a sour face—I suddenly realized how worthless fame and wealth seemed to me.

I heard from Betty that, among the patients, there is an over-70-year-old lady, who contracted leprosy when she was in her 20’s. No one ventured to have any physical contacts with her even after her full recovery. It had been this way for over 50 years until Kaiyong came here two years ago and gave her a hug. She almost cried out in joy. Sometimes, in personal relationships, if only there can be a little more care, a little more love, a little less indifference, a little less discrimination, and a little more common sense, even a world without flush toilet can become very beautiful.
