When a seed grows - sharing about the Caring Training Series conducted by the Mental Health Workgroup in Toronto (2010 Spring)

Started as a seed project idea that came from the CHE training in 2008, the Mental Health Workgroup of the Go & Love Foundation in Toronto conducted a 6-session (2 hours each) series of Caring Training (level 1) in October – November 2009. The content of the training includes (1) the foundation of caring, (2) qualities of the caregiver, (3) self understanding, (4) holistic care (with mental health component), (5) listening and communication skills, and (6) self-care skills for caregiver. Four trainers with mental health work or counseling work background were involved in providing the training.
Over 20 participants from one organization attended the training and responded positively to it. Participants found the training useful in increasing self-understanding and awareness of their limitations. They also learned listening and communication skills relative to caring work. A reunion meeting with the participants was held in Feb 2010 where they expressed interest in further training. Among various topics suggested, they would like trainers to bring in more case studies for them to practice the skills taught.
We find the feedback encouraging, and the Mental Health Workgroup already started planning for the level-2 training for the same organization, to be held later in the year. It is thrilling to see a seed starting to grow and that people are mobilized to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills necessary for providing care and support to those around them. Go and Love - we hope that through such seed projects, the enthusiasm in caring for others will be spread from local to faraway places.
